3 Low-cost Pet Odor Removal Options for Hardwood Floors

What You'll Need

  • Vinegar
  • Warm water
  • Bucket
  • Grapefruit oil (optional)
  • Bicarbonate of soda
  • Hydrogen peroxide
  • Clean rag
  • Mask
  • Gloves
  • Safety goggles

Pet owners who have wooden floors are constantly faced with the problem of pet odour removal. In particular, pet waste, especially urine, soaks into the wooden floors, resulting in stains and unpleasant smells. When this happens, most pet owners rush to the shops in search of the strongest cleaning material. However, this may not always be the best solution. Wooden floors need considerable, as well as careful, maintenance. Thus, using harsh cleaning materials can in effect damage the floor. There are, however, specific chemicals made to clean pet waste available at local pet shops, but the longer a mess is left unattended, the worse the stain it will leave and the harder it will be to clean.

Given below are three low-cost pet odour removal options for wooden floors. These all use basic materials most people will have to hand for the quickest clean-up.

1. Vinegar Solution

The simplest (and one of the most effective) home solutions to pet odour removal for wooden floors is vinegar. Vinegar is a natural disinfectant. It also works as a natural deodoriser and is useful in eliminating the stink in your floors. For the cleaning solution, mix a cup of white vinegar into a bucket of warm water. Use this solution to mop the floors.

You'll notice an immediate decrease in the odour. Another similar solution is made by mixing a cup of white vinegar with a few drops of grapefruit oil in a bucket of warm water. This solution attacks not only the odour, replacing it with a soothing fragrance, but also eliminates stains. Be wary that a vinegar solution can weaken the sealant on your floors, so take care in not leaving the solution on too long.

2. Bicarbonate of Soda Solution

Another effective kitchen solution is to use bicarbonate of soda. Bicarbonate of soda is very effective in pulling out stains and odours from the floors. Here's what you need to do: sprinkle and leave bicarbonate of soda on the floor for about two to three hours, after which you can mop the floors with the vinegar solution described above. You can also add one cup of bicarbonate of soda to this vinegar solution. In the case of a strong odour, consider sprinkling bicarbonate of soda on the floors and letting it sit overnight.

Bicarbonate of soda can also get into and lighten the wood grain of thinly sealed wood flooring, so keep this in mind when resorting to this method.

3. Hydrogen Peroxide Solution

Another good solution that deals with pet odour removal for wooden floors is hydrogen peroxide. One method is to simply mop the affected area with a cleaning rag soaked in hydrogen peroxide and to let the floor dry out. You will notice a drop in odour as well as a clearing up of the stains on the floor. The other approach is to leave hydrogen peroxide-soaked rags over the affected spots and let them sit there till they dry out. However, you need to be careful while using hydrogen peroxide as this material can bleach your beautiful wooden floor. If your floor gets bleached, you will have to treat the wood once again. Hence, it is best to consult some professionals for tips before opting for this method.

It is also important to take certain precautionary measures when working with hydrogen peroxide. Be sure to prepare yourself with safety gear. This includes a mask, gloves, and safety goggles. Also ensure that the room is well-ventilated. Open the windows before you get to work; this will keep you safe from any chemical fumes that may arise during the clean-up.

Take Stains Out Of Carpet

Getting stains out of your carpet can be a difficult process if you are unprepared. However, there are multiple tried-and-tested ways to tackle the problem. Here are a few tips and tricks to ensure you can remove the mark completely and keep your carpet looking as good as new.

Act Quickly

The most important rule for removing a carpet stain is to act as quickly as possible. Waiting even a short amount of time (under an hour) allows part of the liquid to soak in and dry. To give yourself the best chance, make sure you have the necessary cleaning products in the cupboard before an accident happens.

Blot the Area – Do Not Rub!

Whatever you do, do not scrub or rub the area. Rubbing can actually grind the stain deeper into the carpet fibres, spreading it across a larger area and causing it to dry out rapidly. Instead, make sure you blot the spot repeatedly with a clean cloth to soak up the spill.

Spot Cleaners

Commercial spot cleaners can be the perfect solution for small stains that are caught early. Many manufacturers produce specialist spot cleaners that can be dabbed or sprayed directly onto the carpet. Opting for a spray is usually best, as it avoids grinding the stain into the pile unnecessarily. Leave the product to sit for a few minutes (following the instructions on the bottle), then clean it up as directed. This will generally lift the mark completely if you caught it in time.

Home Remedies

There are numerous traditional home remedies regarded as brilliant ways to lift stubborn marks. Soda water is a well-known option for tackling red wine or dark spills. Shaving foam has also been used successfully as an alternative carpet cleaner.

A lesser-known household trick is using ordinary table salt. Pour a generous amount of salt over the spill, covering it completely to create a small mound so the liquid is fully absorbed. Leave it to sit for a few hours, then hoover it up — you will be surprised to find your carpet completely stain-free.

Carpet Washers and Shampooers

Carpet cleaning machines (whether rented, owned, or portable spot-washers) are an excellent option when you have not been able to treat a spill immediately. These heavy-duty machines can lift dried-on stains relatively easily. While they might not always remove a mark entirely on the first go, they can shift the vast majority of the dirt using hot water and specialist cleaning solution, often utilising a steam-cleaning mechanism.

When you catch them quickly, removing stains from a carpet is a fairly straightforward task. By keeping a few of these different cleaning solutions handy, you will be prepared for any spillages that come your way.
