Should I Power Wash My Deck before Staining?

Generally, yes. Consider your decking materials, weather, and timeline before starting.

Benefits of Pressure Washing

  • Deep Cleaning: Removes embedded dirt, debris, and peeling stain to restore the timber's appearance.

  • Enhanced Penetration: Opens wood pores, allowing the stain to adhere better and provide longer-lasting protection.

  • Mould and Mildew Removal: Eliminates growth that can cause wood rot.

  • Even Application: Creates a uniform surface, preventing a blotchy finish.

Proper Pressure Washing Technique

  • Pressure: Start on a low setting and gradually increase to avoid damaging the timber.

  • Distance: Keep the nozzle 30 to 45 cm (12 to 18 inches) from the surface to prevent splintering.

  • Spray Pattern: Use a wide pattern to distribute pressure evenly.

  • Drying Time: Allow a couple of days for the wood to dry completely before applying stain.

Risks of Skipping Pressure Washing

  • Poor Adhesion: Stain will not bond to a dirty surface, reducing its lifespan.

  • Inconsistent Appearance: Dirt and old stains cause discolouration and uneven patches.

  • Continued Mould Growth: Staining over mould does not kill it.

Pressure Washing vs. Cleaning

  • Pressure Washing: Best for durable materials (pressure-treated timber, composite, concrete) and removing stubborn stains or old finishes.

  • Cleaning: Involves scrubbing with a deck cleaner or mild detergent. Safer for delicate timber (like cedar) and suitable for light maintenance.

  • Note: Heavily soiled decks may require both methods.

When to Pressure Wash

  • Weather: Ensure no rain is expected for 24 to 48 hours.

  • Temperature: Best between 10°C and 32°C. Avoid extreme heat or freezing.

  • Season: Spring, early summer, or early autumn.

Staining Guidelines

  • The Water Droplet Test: Sprinkle water on the dry deck. If it absorbs, the wood is ready for stain. If it beads, further cleaning is required.

  • Using Soap: Use outdoor-specific detergents for mould or stubborn stains (grease/rust). Avoid bleach and harsh chemicals.

  • Best Time to Stain: Morning or early afternoon, avoiding morning dew and direct, intense sunlight.

  • Drying Time: Most stains dry to the touch in 24 hours in ideal conditions (moderate temperature, low humidity). Wait 24 to 48 hours before walking on it or replacing furniture.

  • Timeline: Cleaning and staining in a single day is rarely recommended due to necessary drying times.
